Made-to-Drawing UHMWPE Parts: A Buyer's Guide to CNC Custom Fabrication (2026)

#UHMWPE #CNC Machining #Custom Fabrication #Made-to-Drawing #Tolerance
"Can you make this from my drawing?" is the single most common opening line in our inbox — and the answer is almost always yes. JSLT runs a full in-house chain: UHMWPE resin → sintered sheet → CNC saw → CNC drill / counterbore → CNC mill / router → finished, edge-trimmed, labeled, and crated part.

But "yes, we can" hides a lot of detail that decides whether your part arrives correct, on time, and at the price quoted. This guide walks you, the buyer, through every checkpoint between your CAD file and the wooden crate landing at your port — what file formats we accept, what tolerances are realistic for UHMWPE, what surface finishes change cost, and the 7-step workflow we follow for every custom job. By the end you will be able to send an RFQ that gets a firm price the same day.

1. The full JSLT custom-fabrication chain (and why it matters)

Most overseas buyers source UHMWPE in one of three ways:

  • Trader → sub-contracts to factory → sub-contracts to job shop. Cheapest quote, longest lead time, lowest accountability. Tolerance complaints disappear into a chain of finger-pointing.
  • Factory makes sheet, buyer machines locally. Predictable for big shops in Germany, USA, Australia. But shipping a 4×2 m sheet across the Pacific only to cut 60% of it into chips is wasteful.
  • Single-source factory does sheet AND machining (JSLT's model). One PO, one inspection, one BL, one warranty owner. The price premium vs raw sheet is typically 15-35% — less than overseas machining cost on every job we've benchmarked.

Our chain runs in one building in Dezhou:

2. Sheet sintering12-platen 800-ton press6-200 mm thick, up to 4×2 m

2. Drawing file formats we accept (and what you should send)

We open and quote from virtually any 2D or 3D format, but the file you send shifts both the price and the lead time:

  • STEP (.step / .stp) — preferred for parts. Native 3D solid; we can extract every dimension, tolerance, and surface needed for CAM. Quote in 4 hours.
  • DWG / DXF (2D drawings). Perfectly fine for sheet cutting, hole patterns, and prismatic parts. Make sure dimensions, tolerances, and units (mm vs inch) are explicitly noted. Quote in 6-8 hours.
  • IGES (.igs). Acceptable; occasional surface healing required.
  • PDF or hand-sketch. Yes — we will redraw it, but expect a 24-hour quote turnaround and one round of confirmation emails. For one-off prototypes a clear photo with dimensions written on it is fine.
  • SolidWorks (.sldprt) / Inventor (.ipt). Native files welcome — we run SolidWorks 2024 and Mastercam 2024.

Always include: material (UHMWPE / HDPE / PA6 / POM / PTFE / PEEK), color, quantity, surface finish if critical, and any edge-radius requirements. Missing these adds at least one email round-trip.

3. Realistic tolerances on UHMWPE (and why they're different from steel)

UHMWPE has a coefficient of thermal expansion 15-20× higher than carbon steel. A part dimensioned at 20 °C will measurably grow at 40 °C and shrink at -10 °C. We design and inspect at 23 °C ± 2 °C per ISO 291. Demanding ±0.05 mm tolerance on a 1-meter UHMWPE part is physically impossible across temperature swings — if your application sees them, design with clearance instead.

Realistic, achievable tolerances for our shop:

4. Surface finishes — what each one costs

UHMWPE machines like soft butter — long, stringy chips. Standard finish off the saw is fuzzy and edge-burred. Our standard QC step removes burrs and breaks all sharp edges. Beyond that, customers can specify:

  • As-sawn, deburred (default) — included.
  • CNC-routed edge, Ra 3.2 µm — standard for visible parts; +5–10% on small jobs.
  • Skim-milled face, Ra 1.6 µm — for sealing surfaces, sliding surfaces; +15–25%.
  • Polished (cloth + non-abrasive paste) — cosmetic only, request only if needed; +30–50%.
  • Edge chamfer 0.5×45° / radius R3 — widely requested for safety on handling parts; +5%.
  • Laser-marked part number — 1-line, up to 50 mm long, included for orders >100 pcs.

5. The 7-step workflow from PO to ocean container

Every custom job, sample or 5-ton order, follows the same 7 steps:

  1. Drawing review & manufacturability (4-8 h). Engineer flags impossible tolerances, thin walls, sharp internal corners. We propose changes if needed.
  2. Quote with material certificate (4-12 h). Per-piece price, MOQ if applicable, lead time, packing.
  3. 30% T/T deposit + DI-PI exchange. Production starts the next morning.
  4. Sheet stock allocation (1-2 days). Either pulled from finished stock (PE1000 standard) or pressed to order (specialty grades).
  5. CNC machining (3-10 days). Depends on quantity and complexity.
  6. QC + photo report (1 day). Per-piece dimensional check on request, photo of every batch sent before shipment.
  7. Packing & shipment (2-3 days). Wooden crates, fumigated, with shipping marks; DDP or FOB Qingdao.

Total: 10-20 days ex-factory for 95% of orders. Air freight available for samples and emergency replacements.

6. MOQ, sample policy, and small-batch pricing

We deliberately keep MOQ low to support engineers in their prototyping phase:

  • 1 piece for full-machined custom parts — sample fee may apply if bespoke tooling needed (refundable on first production order).
  • 50 kg for cut sheets and standard plates.
  • 500 kg for custom-color or specialty-grade UHMWPE (UV-stabilized, antistatic, fire-retardant).

Pricing breaks: roughly 15% off at 100 pcs, 25% off at 500 pcs, 35% off at 2000 pcs vs single-piece price. Material is roughly 40% of total part cost — the rest is machining time, QC, packing, and freight.

7. Common mistakes that delay your order (and how to avoid them)

Patterns we see weekly:

  • Drawing in inch, dimensions in mm — always state units explicitly in the title block.
  • No tolerance specified — we default to ISO 2768-m (medium); state H8/h8 fits if critical.
  • Demanding steel-grade tolerances on a 2-meter part — see Section 3, the part will simply grow with temperature.
  • Specifying "UHMWPE" without grade — PE500 / PE1000 / PE9000 are very different in price (1× / 1.4× / 2.5×) and performance.
  • Forgetting color requirements — natural white is standard; black, green (FDA), or custom adds 8-15%.
  • Asking for "mirror finish" — UHMWPE cannot mirror-polish; surface stays slightly waxy. We can deliver Ra 0.8 µm max.

❓ Frequently Asked Questions

❓ Can you machine parts to within ±0.05 mm?

Only on sub-100 mm parts at controlled temperature. For longer parts UHMWPE thermal expansion physically prevents that tight a tolerance — design with clearance instead.

❓ What is the largest part you can mill?

Our CNC mill bed is 1500×800 mm, 200 mm thick. Larger parts can be split and bolted (we cannot weld UHMWPE).

❓ Do you machine other plastics besides UHMWPE?

Yes — HDPE, PA6 / PA66, POM, PTFE, PEEK, PPSU, and PP. Same workflow, slightly different feeds and speeds.

❓ Can you supply with material test certificate (MTC)?

Yes, every shipment includes batch MTC. Third-party SGS report available on request (extra fee).

❓ What payment terms do you offer for custom parts?

30% T/T deposit, 70% balance against B/L copy. L/C at sight available for orders >US$30,000.

❓ Do you do reverse engineering from a sample?

Yes — ship the sample to Qingdao, we 3D-scan it, redraw, send STEP for your sign-off, then quote. Allow +5 days lead time.

❓ How do you protect my drawing IP?

We sign NDA on request. Drawings are kept on an internal server, not shared with third parties or used as marketing material.
