1. Quick reference — the 4 certifications that matter
FDA 21 CFR 177.1520 — US Food and Drug Administration regulation for olefin polymers in food-contact applications. Covers HDPE (high-density polyethylene). The most common spec required for the US market.
EU 10/2011 — European Union plastics-in-food regulation. Required for any HDPE board sold in the EU. Includes overall migration limit (10 mg/dm²) and specific migration limits for each additive.
NSF/ANSI 51 — third-party certification by NSF International specifically for food-equipment materials. Required by many US foodservice clients (Sysco, US Foods, McDonald's chain).
LFGB §30/31 — German food contact regulation, sometimes required by German/Swiss food brands beyond EU 10/2011.
2. What 'food-grade' really means at the resin level
Food-grade HDPE has three specific characteristics:
- Virgin resin only — no recycled content, no regrind, no unknown-history pellets
- Approved additives only — antioxidants, slip agents, UV stabilizers must all be on the FDA / EU 10/2011 positive list
- Documented production lot tracking — supplier must prove which resin batch went into your sheets
JSLT sources food-grade HDPE exclusively from Sinopec YPC, Lyondellbasell Lupolen, or ExxonMobil HDPE — all with current 21 CFR 177.1520 letters. We provide the resin-mill certificate with every food-grade order.
3. Color matters more than you think
HDPE cutting boards come in 6 standard colors for HACCP cross-contamination control:
| Color | Use | Pigment |
|---|---|---|
| White | Bakery, dairy, raw fish | TiO₂ (FDA-approved) |
| Yellow | Raw poultry | Cadmium-free yellow |
| Red | Raw red meat | Iron oxide |
| Green | Vegetables, fruits | Phthalocyanine green |
| Blue | Cooked fish | Phthalocyanine blue (FDA-listed) |
| Brown | Cooked meat | Iron oxide brown |
Critical: ask for the pigment certificate. Many cheap factories use industrial-grade pigments that fail FDA migration testing.
4. How to spot a fake FDA certificate
Most fake FDA certs you see on Alibaba have these tells:
- Issued by 'FDA China' — there is no such body; FDA is a US federal agency only
- Generic test report header with no test-laboratory ID number
- Tests performed on a 'sample' rather than a specific resin lot
- No specific FDA regulation cited (e.g., '21 CFR 177.1520')
- No reference to actual migration test method (FDA 21 CFR 175.300, 176.170)
Real FDA-supporting documentation comes from the resin manufacturer (Lyondell, ExxonMobil, Sinopec) as a 'Letter of Compliance' citing 21 CFR 177.1520(c) item 3.1, 3.2 etc. JSLT provides this letter on request for every food-grade order.
5. Surface finish & resurfacing
HDPE cutting board surfaces come in three finishes:
Smooth (calendered) — best for raw fish, dairy. Slightly slippery, very easy to clean.
Matte (sanded) — most popular for general food prep. Slight grip, forgiving of knife marks.
Textured (embossed) — for cutting boards under conveyor lines or hot product. Anti-slip but harder to deep-clean.
HDPE boards can be resurfaced 4-6 times in their life by light sanding and re-flame-treating, extending service life to 5-8 years.
6. JSLT food-grade HDPE SKUs

❓ Frequently Asked Questions
❓ Is HDPE safe for hot food?
Standard HDPE is FDA-compliant up to ~80 °C continuous food contact. For hot food contact above that, switch to polypropylene (PP) or polysulfone (PSU).
❓ Can I get LFGB and FDA certificates on the same boards?
Yes — JSLT food-grade HDPE meets FDA 21 CFR 177.1520, EU 10/2011, NSF/ANSI 51 and LFGB §30/31 simultaneously. We provide all four documents on request.
❓ How thick should a butcher block be?
For commercial butchering: 75-100 mm HDPE. For home / light commercial: 25-40 mm. For industrial chopping lines: 100 mm with stainless edge banding.
❓ Can HDPE boards be re-sanded if they get scored?
Yes — light sanding with 80 grit then 240 grit restores food-safety surface. We recommend resurfacing every 12-18 months in heavy commercial use.
❓ How do I verify the certificates are real?
Ask the supplier to email the original resin-mill letter (e.g., from Lyondellbasell). Resin mills will confirm authenticity if you contact their compliance desk directly with the certificate number.
