Choosing the right polyethylene grade is the single biggest factor in plastic part lifetime. Pick PE-1000 when PE-500 would do, and you have paid for performance you cannot use. Pick PE-300 where PE-1000 is needed, and the part fails in months. This guide shows how to match grade to application using molecular weight, wear data, and 8 real-world criteria.

What molecular weight actually means in practice

Polyethylene is classified by its average molecular weight. PE-300 (HMW-PE) sits around 300,000 g/mol. PE-500 (very-high-MW PE) is roughly 500,000 g/mol. PE-1000 (UHMW-PE, also called PE-UHMW or UHMWPE) is at least 3.1 million g/mol. As molecular weight rises, abrasion resistance, impact strength and low-friction performance all improve — but so does cost and machining difficulty. Density stays in the 0.93–0.94 g/cm³ band across all three grades, so weight savings are not the differentiator.

Wear resistance benchmark — ISO 15527 sand slurry test

The ISO 15527 sand slurry test is the most-cited wear comparison method for UHMWPE. A test specimen rotates in a slurry of quartz sand and water, and mass loss is measured after a fixed cycle count. PE-1000 typically shows 4–6× lower mass loss than PE-500 and 8–10× lower than PE-300. Note that real-world correction factors apply: hot slurries below 60 °C have minimal effect, but particle size, sharp edges and slurry pH all shift results. Use the benchmark to compare grades, not to predict absolute service life.

Application matrix — which grade for which job

Match these conditions to the recommended grade in your data sheet.

  • Mining chute liner (iron ore, coal, copper concentrate) → PE-1000, 12–40 mm thick, counter-bored bolt mount
  • Marine bollard facing pad → PE-1000, 30–80 mm thick, T-bolt capture or counter-bored mount
  • Conveyor wear strip / chain guide (food line) → PE-1000 FDA grade, 6–25 mm thick
  • Truck bed liner (gravel, scrap, bulk hauling) → PE-500 or PE-1000, 12–25 mm thick
  • Ground protection mat (crane outrigger, temporary roadway) → PE-500 in standard load, PE-1000 for extreme
  • Bushing or sliding pad (low-load, dry sliding) → PE-300 or PE-500, machined from rod stock
  • Synthetic ice rink panel → PE-1000, 12–15 mm thick, dovetail edge profile
  • Cutting board / food prep surface → PE-500 FDA grade (PE-1000 is overkill for this duty)

When PE-300 is the right answer

Engineers often default to PE-1000 because it is famous, but PE-300 is genuinely superior for some duties: low-load bushings, sound-deadening pads, gaskets, and any part that needs tighter machining tolerances than PE-1000 can hold. PE-300 also accepts adhesive bonding more readily than PE-1000, which simplifies assembly for multi-piece jigs and fixtures. Joining is by mechanical fastening, counter-bored bolting, T-bolt capture, tongue-and-groove or fillet plates.

Frequently Asked Questions

Is PE-1000 always better than PE-500?

No. PE-1000 wears 2.5× longer in slurry abrasion but costs 50% more. For a part that wears out from corrosion or impact rather than abrasion, PE-500 is the right choice.

Can I substitute PE-300 for HDPE?

PE-300 is a high-MW HDPE — the names overlap. Standard injection-grade HDPE has molecular weight around 100,000 g/mol; PE-300 starts at 300,000 g/mol. Always confirm the molecular weight on the Material Test Report.

Does FDA-grade UHMWPE cost more?

Typically 5–10% premium over standard PE-1000. FDA grade has tighter additive control and a CoA confirming compliance with FDA 21 CFR 177.1520 and EU 10/2011.

What thickness do you stock?

PE-1000 in 6, 8, 10, 12, 15, 20, 25, 30, 40, 50, 60, 80 and 100 mm. PE-500 and PE-300 in 6–50 mm. Custom thickness on request, MOQ from 1 piece.

Do you provide MTR with each shipment?

Yes. Each batch ships with Material Test Report (MTR) showing density, molecular weight grade, batch heat number, and ISO 9001 inspection sign-off. CoA on request.
